How To Cope With Winter Blues

In the winter, life can get dark. Literally. The sky is almost always gray, it’s bitterly cold outside, and it is easy to get lazy and stay in bed all day. It is even scientifically proven that we can feel a little more down in the winter. Fortunately, there are ways to turn your frown upside down during the snowy season.

Here are some ways to help put a little chipper in your step even on the darkest of days.

1. Focus On What You Can Be Grateful For

Instead of thinking about what you don’t have, focus on little things you can be thankful for. This will dramatically shift your mindset and boost positivity in your life.

2. Exercise

I don’t know about you, but exercise always helps me feel better. Getting yourself moving can give you a satisfied feeling, like you are accomplishing things with your life. Exercise also sends off dopamine in the brain, which automatically makes you happier. Recently I have been doing hot yoga and I always feel so fulfilled when I am done.

3. Get Your Planner Out

Do you wish to see that new movie that just came out that always catches your eye from the trailers? Grab a few of your friends to go see it. Are you just dying to get a new scarf? Go to the mall and treat yourself. Does that new bestseller look promising? Go to Barnes and Noble and read it with a nice cup of Starbucks in your hand. You deserve it.

4. Help Others

It has been scientifically proven that doing service can make you happier. Remember that the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference. If you would like some ideas, look at my page “Random Acts of Kindness” for inspiration.

5. Jam Out

Listen to your favorite songs and do not be afraid to crank out a few dance moves. Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Micheal Jackson, you name it. Currently I am listening to Grouplove’s “Welcome To Your Life”, which is a great song if you are looking for a new one to get hooked on.

6. Make Your Bed

This is a psychological thing, but if you make your bed, you are much less likely to sink back into it and binge watch 10 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. Yes, Grey’s Anatomy is great, but being a bum won’t help you get over your winter blues. Maybe just limit yourself to one episode a day, because God knows how addicting that show can be.

7. Stay Social

It is easy to get sad when we are alone. We get lost in our own thoughts. However, when we spend time with people we love, we automatically are in a great mood. Laughter can be the best medication.

8. If these feelings of sadness are prolonged, visit your general doctor

There is absolutely no shame in seeing a counselor or a certified professional if these feelings you are having are serious. Your health professional might offer helpful steps to conquer these feelings such as light therapy, psychotherapy, or antidepressant medication.

I hope these remedies can kick your sadness to the curb. With the right plans of action you can maybe even grow to love the cold season of winter.

    Hey Ash!
I love the encouragement, although I’m not sure I can limit myself to one episode of Grey’s. 😉 I’m out in Colorado and it’s super easy to get depressed when it snows. Yesterday the sun didn’t even shine! I appreciate the tips to help me stay sane during these winter months.

Thanks Tashina for your kind words! Soon enough the sun will start shining. And in the meantime, you can shine your own light in Colorado 🙂

Have you tried the blue light therapy or vitamin D? Vitamin D helps my DH.

Winter is pretty rough for me. The short days and blah weather usually pit me in a funk. These are great tips. I find that if I can get out and do something my mood usually improves pretty quickly.

As simple as it is, I love the make your bed tip. I used to never make it, but as an adult I do it every single day and find it very calming.
