How To Stay In Shape Over Summer Break at Dear Ash

Hello, beautiful! In case we haven’t met before, my name is Haley and I’m the blogger behind Haley Marie Blog. I’m a rising college sophomore studying journalism and political science at Boston University, and I love to blog all the things I’ve learned about style and beauty; health and fitness; and college and career success.

Today, I’m here to talk to you all about one of my favorite subjects, which also happens to be the one that challenges me most: working out! I love exercise not just because I want to get ripped arms or a tight tummy (though that is always a plus!), but because it also gives me confidence, energy and clarity of mind.

At school, keeping up with a demanding workout schedule is easy because I have access to a gym 24/7, and extracurricular fitness classes (like ballet and yoga) are included in my tuition. However, since I’ve been home for the summer, I have found it challenging to maintain the same level of fitness and dedication I had when I was away at school.

So, my guest post today is all about how you and me both can stay in shape over summer break when you might not have access to the same tools you have when you’re at college! If you’re struggling to stay motivated to exercise over the summer, here are just a few tips you might consider trying:

1. Take advantage of free workouts

Take Advantage Of Free Workouts - How To Stay In Shape Over Summer Break at Dear Ash

If you live near a city, there’s probably free workouts happening all around you and you don’t even know it! Many parks in big cities offer free workout programs or series over the summer to help you stay in shape while enjoying the scenery. Even in my small town, there’s a local running club you can join for weekly workouts over at the track by my old high school. However, if your town doesn’t have either of these things, you can always take advantage of free workouts on YouTube – I love the channels Blogilates and Tone It Up for challenging workouts I can do anywhere, anytime.

2. Grab a workout partner

Grab A Workout Partner - How To Stay In Shape Over Summer Break at Dear Ash

Since you’re home for the summer, chances are some of your best friends from high school probably are too! You might also have friends from college who live nearby, or even family members who are willing to work out with you. Studies show working out with a partner can increase the time you spend exercising each week, so grab a buddy and head to the gym, a yoga class, or out running – whatever you both prefer. You’ll both be sweating in no time!

3. Try a new fitness craze

Try A New Fitness Craze - How To Stay In Shape Over Summer Break at Dear Ash

Going to a fitness class is one of my favorite ways to stay in shape. Nowadays, there’s so much variety in the kind of workout you can get at a fitness class or studio. You’ve probably already tried things like yoga, kickboxing and boot camp already – but what about aerial yoga or piloxing (a combo of Pilates and boxing)? Trying a new fitness trend is an exciting way to get in a workout – and chances are, your friends will be dying to come to class with you! I recently did a post on Haley Marie Blog about my favorite summer fitness trends for 2017 – click here to check it out and get some more workout inspiration.

4. Stay active outside

Stay Active Outside - How To Stay In Shape Over Summer Break at Dear Ash

Working out in a gym or fitness studio isn’t the only way to stay active over the summer. Many of the outdoor activities you already love can help you get fitter while you enjoy the warm weather! For example, my boyfriend Ryan and I love to spend our summers swimming in my pool, which also happens to be a great upper-body workout. Other fun fitness activities you might try include hiking your favorite trail or mountain, going for a bike ride or playing a pickup game of your favorite sport with friends.

5. Plan to eat healthy ahead of time

Plan to eat healthy ahead of time - How To Stay In Shape Over Summer Break at Dear Ash

How many times have you vowed to yourself “I’m going to eat healthy today” only to wind up devouring an entire plate of cheese fries with your friends? Planning your meals ahead of time can help with that! For example, if you’re going out to eat to celebrate your sister’s birthday, check the menu online to see what lighter options are available before you get to the restaurant. With a little advance planning, eating healthy over the summer becomes easy as heck – not to mention, you won’t have to miss out on all the fun parties and hangouts that make summer so great!

6. Finally, strive for balance + moderation!

Finally, strive for balance + moderation! - How To Stay In Shape Over Summer Break at Dear Ash

I don’t like to follow rules when it comes to diet or exercise, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be “Everything in moderation!” Summer would be sad if I knew I could never enjoy another ice cream cone again – but I would also feel pretty tired and gross if that was the only thing I ever ate. That’s why the key to healthy living is striving for balance: as long as you eat mostly healthy, plant-based foods – such as fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, beans and legumes – the occasional burger or slice of pizza isn’t going to kill you. So, in the words of my icon Emma Stone, “Life is short. Eat the damn red velvet cupcake!”

That’s awesome you can combine quality time with your kiddos and taking care of yourself through fitness. I hope y’all have amazing adventures heading your way this summer! hugs xox

I need to get better about packing my lunch when we go out. That’s my goal for the summer. I also really wish I could find a workout partner.

Rachel, my hope is that this summer you can find someone to stay in shape with! Maybe you could meet one in a yoga or pilates class at the gym? Just a thought. hugs and love xox

I need to try and get back into shape. My 4 year old only sleeps for two hours a night, so I’m always exhausted and it’s meant I’ve quickly gained weight. I’m sure things will start to right themselves again soon though 🙂

Louise, I’m a full advocate for you taking care of yourself in working out! Taking care of yourself certainly doesn’t make you less of a mom, it makes you a smart human being with a sense of self-respect. You have my full support to hit the gym, my dear. Hugs and love xox

Great post. I love your suggestions, Hailey. Now I’m searching for the nearest Piloxing class! I’ve never heard of it but like the idea of Pilates and Boxing. Thanks for sharing.

Summer break is hard for us to stay in shape! I have a hard time staying in shape at any point in the year though haha!

Staying in shape is such a drag, but totally worth it in the end for our mental and physical health. Good luck this summer in getting back in the game! Hugs xox
